We have big plans here at Camp Barakel for this special camp! We will enjoy fun activities, close friendships, good food, and learning about our amazing God in specially-designed Chapel sessions.
We accept the trust you place in us with a commitment to provide a camping experience that will be enjoyable and beneficial. Some benefits to the campers are a change of environment, new friends, new experiences, physical involvement and challenge, new insights and skills, spiritual counsel and good memories. We desire to expose each camper to as full a camping experience as possible within the limits of their individual capabilities.
Applications for the 2024 HIS-ability Camp are now open. Application deadline is May 1st.
Sadly, Camp Barakel will not be holding HIS-ability Camp for 2025.

Campers are housed by age and gender with 6-7 campers and 2-3 trained adult counselors in each cabin. The daily program is a careful mix of outdoor activities, leisure times, group events and exciting opportunities to learn more about God. Our speakers for the week have years of experience in communicating Bible truths in creative, interesting ways.
Campers sleep in our clean, well-constructed cabins with newly renovated bathrooms. They are carefully nestled in to our mature forest on a hill overlooking Shear Lake. Meals are taken in our modern dining hall with each cabin group eating together around one table. Please let us know of any medically-necessary dietary needs on the health form.
Directions • We’re located 5 miles east of Fairview along M-72. A streetlight is suspended over the highway at our access road.
For GPS directions, use 1798 Shear Lake Rd., Fairview, MI 48621. If you have an older GPS device, however, please see our directions page.
Eligibility • HIS-ability Camp is available for campers ages 18–50 who are classified with mild cognitive impairment (EMI) or upper moderate cognitive impairment (upper TMI)—along with self-mobile campers who have physical but no mental impairments. All campers need to be able to communicate daily living desires and needs.
Safety • Nurses are on hand at all times to protect the health of our campers and, as a licensee of the State of Michigan, we are constantly advised of health and safety regulations. Our counselors are carefully selected adults who complete a two-day training program on the Care and Counseling of People with Disabilities. The full ratio of campers to staff is about 2:1.
Our Goals • We accept the trust you place in us with a commitment to provide a camping experience that will be enjoyable and beneficial through a change of environment, new friends, new experiences, physical involvement and challenge, new insights and skills, spiritual counsel and good memories. We desire to expose each camper to as full a camping experience as possible.
